A turner's cube was a traditional exercise given to a new machinist. It requires careful setup and precision boring to execute successfully. I made the one shown here on a milling machine I converted to full CNC control. It is made of MIC-6 aluminum, also know as jig and fixture plate. It is a very stable aluminum alloy that doesn't warp even when large amounts of material are removed. Perfect for a turner's cube. The cube measures approximately 1 1\/4" on a side and weighs just about a ounce. If you lay it on your desk I guarantee it will be picked up and generate many questions. I find myself picking one up and spinning it between my thumb and finger, totally mesmerized by the hypnotic interplay of light on the cube.
